About JEE.

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is a national-level entrance examination conducted for admission to undergraduate engineering programs at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and other top engineering colleges across India.

The JEE has two phases – the JEE Main and the JEE Advanced. The JEE Main is the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced. Based on the performance in JEE Main, top-scoring students are shortlisted to appear for JEE Advanced.

Overview of JEE Exam:

  •  The JEE Main is conducted twice a year in January and April in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
  •  The JEE Advanced is conducted annually in May in pen-paper mode by the IITs under the guidance of the Joint Admission Board (JAB).
  • The JEE Main comprises three subjects – Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The exam consists of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and numerical value questions.
  •  The JEE Advanced comprises two mandatory papers – Paper 1 and Paper 2. Students have to attempt questions from Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in each paper. The exam format is purely numerical value questions.
  •  The duration of JEE Main is 3 hours whereas JEE Advanced is 3 hours per paper.

Subject Tested for Exam:

  • Prioritize important topics first before moving on to others
  •  Set milestones and mini-goals to stay motivated through the prep process
  • Wake up early to utilize morning hours when your mind is fresh
  •  Avoid distractions like social media and TV during dedicated study hours

 Solving Previous Papers

  • Make it a habit to solve previous years’ JEE question papers
  •  Analyze the type and difficulty level of questions that have appeared over the years
  • Identify your weak areas based on topics you find difficult in past papers
  • Use past papers for timed practice to build exam temperament

Taking Mocks

  •  Take regular mocks in a simulated environment
  • Analyze your performance to identify improvement areas
  • Work on speed and accuracy based on mock analysis
  • Take mocks seriously like the real exam to get a feel of the test format

 Focus Topics

  • Physics – Mechanics, Waves & Oscillations, Electrostatics, Modern Physics
  • Chemistry – Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry
  • Math – Coordinate Geometry, Calculus, Algebra

Mastering these core topics through rigorous practice will help you maximize your score.

Test Series

Attempting mock tests and previous years’ papers is important. Some good test series options are:

  • Allen Test Series
  • Aakash Test Series
  • FITJEE Grand Masters Package (GMP)
  • Embibe Mock Tests

Practice these well and analyze them to identify your weak areas. With the right books, online lectures, and test series, you can excel in JEE!

Coaching vs Self Study

Deciding whether to join coaching classes or self-study for JEE is an important decision. Here are some of the key considerations:

Pros of Coaching Classes
  • Structured guidance from experienced faculty
  • Pre-designed study schedule and timetable
  • Regular tests and feedback on performance
  • Motivation to study with peer groups in coaching
  • Doubt-solving support is readily available
  •  Tips and tricks to master solving questions quickly
Cons of Coaching Classes
  • Expensive fee packages, especially for long-term courses
  • Fixed classroom timings, less flexibility
  •  Dependent on coaching faculty, can’t customize study
  • Batch size may be too big for personalized attention
Pros of Self-Study
  •  Learn at your own pace and schedule flexibility
  • One-to-one focus, more control over what to study
  • Learn techniques to self-analyze and improve
  • Customize study plan as per own strengths/weaknesses
  • Save on coaching fees, more cost-effective
Cons of Self-Study
  • Structuring study schedules and targets is challenging
  • Harder to stay motivated without peer competition
  • Solving doubts and assessing progress requires effort
  • May not get expertise guidance needed in all topics
  • Distractions and procrastination can derail preparation

Overall, the choice between coaching vs self-study depends on your learning style, ability to self-manage your prep, and financial capability. Many toppers do succeed through self-study with discipline and smart preparation. Coaching offers more structured guidance, at a higher cost. Evaluating honestly what would work best for you is important.

Result & Cutoff

The JEE Main result is declared by NTA in the form of scorecards that contain subject-wise percentile scores and total normalized scores. The result is announced online on the official website jeemain.nta.nic.in.

Candidates who qualify for JEE Main by scoring above the required cutoff marks become eligible to appear for JEE Advanced. The minimum qualifying cutoff marks vary for different categories.

  • General category candidates need to score at least 75% aggregate marks to qualify for JEE Main.
  • For the SC/ST category, the minimum aggregate mark required is 65%.
  • For OBC-NCL candidates, the cutoff is 70% aggregate marks.

Based on the normalization methodology, the JEE Main 2022 cutoff marks were:

  • General: 74.3 NTA Score
  • OBC: 63 NTA Score
  • SC: 54 NTA Score
  • ST: 44.3 NTA Score

The cutoff marks are released separately for Paper 1 (BE/BTech) and Paper 2 (BArch/BPlanning). Cutoff also varies for each IIT and program.

For admission to top IITs, candidates have to score above the 90+ NTA score range. The cutoff goes higher for popular programs like Computer Science Engineering.

  • After the JEE Main result, the JoSAA counseling process starts. Seats across IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other colleges accepting JEE Main scores are filled based on candidates’ preferences, ranks, and availability of seats.
  • Multiple rounds of JoSAA counseling are conducted. Candidates who secure a rank under 35,000 can participate in JoSAA counseling for IIT admissions.
